Orioles fall in extras to the Rangers 2-1: Recap 6/5/19

The Orioles came into tonight’s game following a nail biter last night that came all the way down the the last pitch. This game was no different.

Orioles rookie sensation John Means got the start tonight. Means entered the game with a record of 5-4 and an ERA of 2.80.

Means let one run up in the first inning, a RBI double to Elvis Andrus. That would stand as the only run scored in the game until the ninth inning.

Means, 26, had yet another fantastic outing tonight, holding a good Rangers offense to just one run off four hits. Means also walked none and recorded five strikeouts to reach 50 K’s this season.

The injury bug cursed the Orioles tonight, with three starting players leaving the game due to injury. This included catcher Pedro Severino due to concussion protocol, right fielder DJ Stewart, who collided with infielder Hanser Alberto on a pop fly foul ball and then ran into the wall. Lastly second baseman Jonathan Villar left the game quietly with thumb soreness.

Despite the injures, the Orioles played on, and the bullpen was lights out. Shawn Armstrong and Miguel Castro each threw a scoreless inning in the seventh and eighth innings respectively. They struck out three batters combined in two innings.

Richie Martin would come up to the plate in the top of the ninth with the Orioles trailing 0-1. Martin hits a perfectly timed home run to left field to tie the game at one a piece. The young shortstop’s second career home run was a clutch one.

This game would eventually go to the bottom of the twelfth inning at 1-1, when Mychal Givens stepped out of the bullpen to pitch. When the inning started and TV coverage came back from commercial break, it was actually Paul Fry who came out to throw the twelfth. Fry eventually gave up the walkoff single to Delino DeShields to end it.

The Rangers took game two 2-1. Paul Fry took the loss and moves to 0-3 on the season.

The Orioles have a chance for a series win tomorrow, as they face the Rangers in game three at 8:05 p.m. ET.
