Orioles drop first game of Beltway Series 8-1: Recap 7/16/19

The Orioles hosted game one of this two-game set with the neighboring Washington Nationals.

Asher Wojciechowski got the start in tonight’s game, and while he pitched well, the offense did not offer much support. Over 5.1 innings, Wojciechowski allowed three runs off six hits and also struck out seven.

The Nationals got on the board first in the second inning off a solo home run. This put the Nats up 1-0.

The Orioles answered in the bottom of the second, tying the game off Hanser Alberto’s line drive home run. Unfortunately this was the only run the Birds could offer.

The Nationals took the lead back in the third, going up 2-1 following an RBI double.

Wojciechowski’s third earned run would not come until the sixth, when he allowed his second home run of the night. This made it a 3-1 Nationals lead. Wojciechowski was then pulled, and Shawn Armstrong finished the inning, but not before balking in another run to put the Orioles in a 4-1 hole.

In the seventh and eighth innings, Miguel Castro and Jimmy Yacabonis respectively, would each give up a run. That gave the Nationals a 6-1 lead entering the ninth.

The Orioles would allow two more runs in the ninth, sealing their 8-1 defeat.

Our MSB Orioles Player of the Game is starting pitcher Asher Wojciechowski, who kept the Orioles in the game until his exit in the sixth. Despite no run support, Wojciechowski pitched well, boasting decent strikeouts. Wojciechowski took the loss and moves to 0-3.

The Orioles host game two of the Beltway Series Wednesday at 7:05 pm ET.
