Orioles Claim Austin Brice off Waivers

The Baltimore Orioles have claimed Austin Brice off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels. To correspond that claim, they have designated Breyvic Valera for assignment.

Brice, a 26 year old right handed reliever, was claimed off waivers by the Angels on November 2th, after pitching to a 5.79 ERA and a 1.393 WHIP in 33 games with the Cincinnati Reds this past season. Brice, who made his major league debut with the Marlins in 2016, is known for his high rate of induced ground balls. Austin Brice was designated for assignment by the Angels on December 29th after the Angels signed catcher, Jonathan Lucroy. Brice was among the players included in the Marlins trade for starting pitcher, Dan Straily.

Breyvic Valera, a utility infielder that was included in the Manny Machado deal, back in August, was evidently the odd man out, after the Orioles picked up infielders Drew Jackson and Richie Martin in the Rule 5 draft, while the roster already includes similar players in Engelb Vielma and Steve Wilkerson.

This is a move to add more depth to the bullpen.
