One Step Closer: Mobile Sports Betting in Maryland

Last Month

The 2022 College Football and NFL season are underway, and we have had some amazing games so far. We can even go to casinos to place bets on these games (finally!), and enjoy the ups and downs of sports betting. The one thing we still cannot do? Use mobile apps, such as FanDuel, BetMGM, and BetRivers to place sports bets on our phone. There have not been many updates regarding this issue either. That was until about a month ago. According to saturdayttradition.com, the Sports Wagering Application Review Commission finally provided a deadline for applications to be submitted for a sports betting app to be approved in Maryland. The Deadline is Oct. 21st. You may be wondering, what is next, and thankfully we received an answer. It will take 45 days to review applications, which places the date when approvals are awarded around the week of December 5th. Afterwards, testing of those apps is done, and then we will be able to place bets. Unless testing takes long, that should give Maryland mobile sports betting before Christmas.

That is where we stood a month ago. On September 22nd, we received more hopeful news regarding how soon we will be able to place a mobile sports bet. CBS News reported, instead of giving a set deadline for legalizing mobile sports betting, the Sports Wagering Application Review Commission is going to allow "rolling approval" of these licenses. That is fantastic news! We can only hope major businesses: FanDuel, BetMGM, BetRivers, DraftKings, and others have applied early enough. This means that there is a potential start date of mobile sports betting in Maryland earlier than anticipated.

I for one and thrilled with these updates. We went months without much of an update, and over a year with sports betting already legal. It is beyond time for Maryland to have mobile sports betting. We should all be hopeful that the Commission continues to do their job in a timely manner. While we won't be able to place a mobile bet on Bills vs. Ravens tomorrow (take the Ravens +3), we should be able to do so for the Super Bowl and March Madness.
