Olympique de Marseille Dominates D.C. United in Audi Field Friendly

After taking home the EA Ligue 1 preseason tournament championship at Audi Field over the weekend, Olympique de Marseille made the most of their weekend in the nation’s capital with a 7-1 win over D.C. United. D.C. United was coming off a 2-0 shutout loss to Atlanta United FC but this friendly hosted at Audi Field was an opportunity for the youth of the club to get some playing time. Six players were called up from Loudoun United FC. Wednesday’s contest also marked the debut of Gordon Wild.

The beginning of the game saw Chris Durkin foul Marley Ake in the box. Marseille was awarded a penalty kick which Kevin Strootman nailed in the 28th minute for a 1-0 lead.

D.C. United tied it just before the half with a Quincy Amarikwa header off a corner kick in the 45th minute.

Then Marseille responded in the second half with six unanswered goals. First it was Nemanja Radonjic in the 48th minute. In the 52nd minute, Dmitri Payet made it 3-1. Boura Sarr added a goal four minutes later and Maxime Lopez made it 5-1 in the 57th minute.

Marseille added three more goals later in the game. In the 83rd minute Floria Chabrolle, Sarr’s second minutes later, and Saif-Eddine Khahoui put the nail in the coffin in the 89th minute.

The Black and Red return to MLS action this Saturday at the Chicago Fire. Kickoff is at 8 p.m.
