NXT Recap for 3/27/19
On this week’s edition of NXT, we get back to the normal routine. Last week we only had one match on the card, the Fatal 5-Way to determine the number one contender for the vacant NXT Title. Three matches took place on this week’s show. One of them being the conclusion of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.
The show kicks off with a very good opening segment between two of the biggest names in NXT, Adam Cole (Bay Bay) and Johnny Gargano. Cole comes out first to the ring followed by Johnny. The crowd is split down the middle. Chants of Johnny Wrestling and Adam Cole went on for well over a minute. While Cole said he did not need the chants, Johnny loved them. They exchanged words back and forth. Cole does not think Johnny deserves a title match. He talks about his debut, War Games, and becoming the very first NXT North American Champion. Johnny really got personal. He talked about how he was told “no” during his tryout for WWE. Despite that, he was brought back. Johnny got placed with Tommaso Ciampa in a tag team with no guarantees. They formed DIY and became one of the most successful teams in NXT. Johnny said he fights for the fans. You could truly feel his passion here.
Cole was not impressed. He said Johnny’s story was like something on Lifetime TV. Cole says he plans to walk out as champion at Takeover New York because that is “Undisputed”. This is when Bobby Fish, Kyle O’Reilly, and Roderick Strong come onto the stage. What role will these three men play in the title match? Will Johnny have back up? He may need it because Adam Cole will try to win the belt by any means necessary.
The first match of the night was a tag team contest between the team of Katy Catanzaro and Lacey Lane vs. Vanessa Borne and Aliyah. We have not seen much of Katy and Lacey on TV. Lacey looks like a cross between Ember Moon and Scorpion from Mortal Kombat with her ring attire. Aliyah and Borne came out matching in their pink and black attire. All four of these women are still learning the ropes, but I saw flashes of potential during this match. I like the aggressive nature Aliyah and Borne brought to the table.
The match was cut short due to interference from Shayna Baszler, Jessamyn Duke, and Marina Shafir. Aliyah and Borne left the ring, leaving Lacey and Katy to fend for themselves. Katy tried to get some offense in on Shayna, but it did not work. Shayna chocked her out. She then goes over and stands on the announce table holding up her NXT Women’s Title. Shayna’s dominance continues here as she looks to retain her title in the upcoming Fatal 4-Way match against Bianca Belair, Io Shirai, and Kairi Sane.
Next up is Matt Riddle vs Kona Reeves. Reeves has not been seen much on TV as of late. These are two guys I am not that particular about. I must admit, I was impressed with both guys here. Riddle’s gimmick does not work for me, but his in-ring work is solid. Reeves showed more focus during this match. He is trying to improve. The highlight of this match by far was Velveteen Dream being brought out on stage on a couch to watch the match. He even had a pimp cup that he was sipping from. Riddle picks up the win with the bromission. Velveteen took over the announcing duties from Kayla Braxton. He announced Riddle by his full name, Matthew Riddle, and the guy who will be facing him at Takeover New York. It was quite funny. Velveteen owns that character quite well. It was on full display here.
In our main event, we get the finals for the Dusty Rhodes Classic. The winner will receive a tag team title match against the War Raiders at Takeover New York. The final teams remaining are Ricochet and Aleister Black vs The Forgotten Sons. Both teams really shined here. Black and Ricochet have not been teaming long, but their chemistry is on point. Black is a pure striker, while Ricochet is your high flyer. Black’s aerial attack is pretty nice as well. Steve Cutler and Wesley Blake deserved praise too. They put up a better fight then I was expecting. In the end, Black and Ricochet pick up the win here with the combo of the Black Mass and 630 off the top rope. Ricochet and Black celebrate with the Dusty Rhodes Trophy. Confetti is flying everywhere. Then, the War Raiders come to the ring for a stare down with their Takeover opponents to close out the show.
I enjoyed this show. I cannot believe we are almost a week away from NXT Takeover New York. The time has really gone by fast. There is one more NXT show to go before we get there. Bianca Belair vs Kairi Sane is one of the matches announced for next week’s show. That should be a good one.
