Notes on today’s pitchers in Fort Myers

The Orioles are in Fort Myers today for their Grapefruit League matchup against the Boston Red Sox. This is their second trip to JetBlue Park in four days, as they left with a 7-6 victory on Wednesday. The next two times the teams will play each other this spring will be in Sarasota on March 8, televised on MASN at 1:05 and on March 20, televised on MASN at 6:05pm.

Mike Wright will make his second start of the spring, third appearance, as I discussed earlier this morning. Wright’s previous start was on Tuesday in Sarasota against the Tampa Bay Rays. He tossed two innings, facing eight batters and was done after allowing just two hits, one walk and one strikeout. He didn’t allow a run.

His first appearance was on Opening Day at Ed Smith Stadium, against a split-squad Minnesota Twins team, tossing two innings, facing eight batters and allowing three hits without walking a batter and striking out one. Again, he didn’t allow a run.

Today’s lineup will feature three regulars. Cedric Mullins will lead off and play center field. Eric Young Jr, will be today’s designated hitter and Trey Mancini will follow behind him, starting in left field. Rio Ruiz is today’s cleanup hitter, playing third base and Rule-5 pick Richie Martin will bat fifth, playing shortstop. Jace Peterson gets another start at first base today, batting sixth and Rule-5 pick Drew Jackson will hit seventh, playing second base. Rounding out the lineup will be Stevie Wilkerson, in right field and Carlos Pérez behind the plate.

Scheduled pitchers following Wright on the mound today will be right-hander Yefry Ramírez, lefty Paul Fry and right-hander Evan Phillips. Ramirez will make his third appearance this spring, after getting the start on Opening Day and making one relief appearance on Tuesday. Each of his appearances have gone two innings and he’s allowed just one run on two hits in four innings this spring.

Fry has two scoreless relief appearances in Grapefruit League action this spring. Each appearance went for just one inning and he’s allowed just one hit, while walking three batters – two alone on Wednesday in Fort Myers. Phillips will make his third outing this spring and he has two, one-inning outings under his belt as well. He also pitched Wednesday in Fort Myers, surrendering just one hit while striking out two.

You can hear today’s game on the radio as it will be broadcast on the flagship station for the Baltimore Orioles, 105.7 The Fan.
