Sean Williams, Navy’s senior safety and a Memphis native, was named the AAC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.

Williams recorded nine tackles, a team high, on Saturday in the Midshipmen’s 22-21 win against the Memphis Tigers. The 2015 Cordova High School graduate also forced two fumbles, both of which Navy recovered.

Elected as Navy’s team co-captain at the beginning of the season, Williams played a large role in the Navy defense keeping Memphis scoreless in the fourth quarter. The Mids’ offense then took over, erasing a 12-point Tiger lead and securing an all-important win.

Up next for Navy (1-1) will be Lehigh (1-1) this Saturday in Annapolis. The two schools have not faced each other since 1987.
