Navy with the easy 3 set win over Holy Cross

ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– The Navy Midshipman came out hot tonight with scorching hitting to put out the Holy Cross team in a three-set sweep at home in the Wesley A. Brown Field House. Navy (19-5, 9-2 Patriot League) posted a 25-11, 25-20, 25-15 victory over Holy Cross (4-20, 1-10).

The first set was a blow out by the Mids but the second set is when the fun began. Holy Cross came out and took a 6-3 lead in the second set but that is when a kill by Maddi Sgattoni gave the serve back to Navy. The score remained close with several ties and a few lead changes until Sgattoni posted a kill to break the tie. The margin then stretched to 21-18 on a kill by Dorothy Murray the senior. This was fallowed up by a kill by Patrick, which made the score 22-18 Navy. Patricia Mattingly then added to the Navy run with an ace to make it five straight. That was all the Mids needed to finish off Holy Cross to go up 2 sets to 0.

The third set started off rocky for the Navy girls as Holy Cross scored the first four points. The key to getting back on track for the Mids was a serving error by the crusaders that got Navy on the board. This led to a kill by Maggie Phillips, to make the score 4-2. Navy then brought the defense and recorded three straight blocks to take the wind out of the Crusaders sails. There were two combo blocks by Patrick and Murray and a solo by Murray that give Navy its first lead of the set at 5-4. The Crusaders did not give in though and slowly took a 10-7 lead. Sarena Seelbach landed a kill to make the score 10-8. This was a start of a 5-0 run for the Mids that gave them a 13-10 lead. The Mids would finish off the set and the match with a 9-2 run that shut the Crusaders down in 3 sets.

In the first and third sets Navy held a .400-.000 advantage in hitting percentage. This was a huge advantage for Navy as it allowed them to outscore Holy Cross in kills by over 20. Navy also held advantages in all the main categories like aces (8-5), digs (47-27) and blocks (7-5).

For the Mids this now sends them to the second spot in the conference and builds on their confidence. Navy will be back in the Wesley A.
