Navy Sports: Weekend Results (10/19-10/22)

Here’s a look at how the Naval Academy’s teams fared the third weekend of October. Also included are “Notable Performances” from each event. Congratulations to all the athletes. Raise the Sail!

Football (2-5, 1-3 AAC)

American footballLost to Houston, 49-36, Saturday afternoon in Annapolis. (Click here for full RECAP)

Sprint Football (4-1, 3-0 CSFL South)

American footballBeat Chestnut Hill, 31-0, holding the Griffins to just 31 yards of total offense and zero first downs in the second half of the game.

Notable Performance: Dean Rye (senior, Fairfax, VA) took his interception 35-yards for a defensive TD. Gavin O’Donnell (senior, Greenfield Township, PA) recorded 2.5 sacks for 15 yards in the 4th quarter. He finished the game with 3.5 tackles for loss and the team lead in tackles with nine.

Men’s Golf

Golf ball in grassFinished third out of 13 teams at the Lehigh Invitational. The event closed out the men’s fall season.

Notable Performance: Charlie Musto (sophomore, Sterling, VA), the reigning Patriot League Individual Medalist, posted a 2-over par 74 in the final found. He finished the tournament in fifth place overall 5-0ver par.

Women’s Golf

Golf ball in grassFinished third out of ten teams at the Lehigh Invitational. The event closed out the women’s fall season.

Notable Performances: Shannon Gould (freshman, O’Fallon, MO), Tori Smith (freshman, Arlington, TX) and Morgan Frazier (junior, Mechanicsburg, PA) finished third through fifth, respectively.

Rifle (4-1, 3-0 GARC)

Air rifle targetSwept their first road trip of the season with a 4,668-4,656 victory at #16 Ole Miss, which followed a 4,660-4,639 win at #15 Memphis.

Notable Performances: Gabriella Mayes (freshman, Rio Rancho, NM) had the highest score (591) of both teams in air rifle in the victory over Memphis. Kestrel Kuhne (junior, Everett, PA) led the field at Ole Miss with a 593 in air rifle and the second best score in smallbore (580).

Rowing (Heavyweight and Lightweight)

Rowing oarsAll four boats racing on the three-mile Charles River course at the world famous Head of the Charles Regatta placed in the top-10 of their respective events.

Notable Performance: The lightweight first varsity boat finished fourth in the Men’s Lightweight Eights event, posting a 16:10.362 result.

Intercollegiate Sailing

SailingCompeting in four regattas over the weekend, the team took home two second-place finishes (at the Truxton Umsted Regatta and at the weather-shortened Central Late Fall Regatta).

Notable Performances:  Connor Bayless (sophomore, Annapolis, MD), Sarah Barkley (senior, New York City, NY) and Sean Linden (sophomore, Brightwaters, NY) won the B division at the Truxton Umsted Regatta.

Men’s Soccer (2-11-1, 1-5 PL)

Navy at LehighBeat Boston University, 2-1, at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility on Saturday night. The win snapped an eight-game losing streak for the Mids.

Notable Performances: Bayne Bentley (freshman, Austin, TX) scored a goal to tie the game in the 71st minute. Jacob Williams (freshman, Millersville, MD) scored in the 85th minutes to take the lead. Williams was selected the Patriot League Rookie of the Week for his performance.

Women’s Soccer (10-5-3, 6-2 PL)

Navy at LehighLost to Colgate, 1-0, in double overtime Saturday at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. The game matched up the first and second place teams in the Patriot League.

Notable Performance: Karli Sottung (senior, Westfield, NJ) recorded four shots, one on goal.

Swimming & Diving (Men and Women) (both are 5-1)

swimmingThe women recorded 13 event wins, while the men picked up 7 victories over Johns Hopkins, Towson and William & Mary Friday night at Lejeune Hall in Annapolis.

Notable Performances: Lauren Barber (senior, New Wilmington, PA) won the 100 breast, 200 breast and 100 IM races for the women. Bradley Buchter (junior, Hickory, NC) posted wins in the one-meter and three-meter events for the men.

Men’s Tennis

Tennis ball closeupTotaled seven wins at the ITA Atlantic Region Championship. Both of the Mids’ doubles tandems and three of four of their singles entries posted main draw victories.

Notable Performances: Andrew Ton (sophomore, Milpitas, CA) won two matches in the 128-player singles draw and teaming with Derrick Thompson (freshman, Towson, MD) won two matches in the 64-team doubles draw.

Women’s Volleyball (17-6, 9-1 PL)

volleyballBeat Lehigh 25-10, 25-13, 25-20 on Friday night and grabbed another victory from Bucknell on Saturday afternoon. The Mids beat the Bison (6-14, 1-8), 31-29, 25-14, 25-14.  Navy has now won seven straight home-league matches and six straight league-matches overall.

Notable Performance: Katie Patrick (senior, Aurora, CO) broke the school record for career blocks when she recorded no. 363 on Saturday afternoon against Bucknell.

Water Polo (12-9, 4-3 MAWPC)

Water poloLost to #20 George Washington, 14-8, on Friday night. The Mids missed 21 shots on the night and couldn’t contain GW’s offense.

Notable Performance: Andrew Shashin (sophomore, Buffalo Grove, IL) scored three goals and led Navy with three ejections drawn.
