Navy Falls to ODU, 44-67, in Men’s Basketball Season Opener

Final: 44-67, Navy falls to ODU

The Old Dominion Monarchs beat the Navy Midshipmen, 67-44, on Tuesday night in Norfolk, VA. It was the season opener for both men’s basketball teams.

Navy kept the game close most of the first half, before falling behind by 15 in the early minutes of the second. The Mids chipped away at the deficit, closing to within three points with 9:47 left in the game. Unfortunately, ODU kept converting Navy turnovers into three-pointers to pull back away. The Monarchs ended the game on a 27-7 run.

For Navy, George Kiernan led the offense with 10 points. John Carter, Jr. added eight points and claimed the team lead in rebounds (10) and tied for the lead in assists (2). Freshman, Luke Loehr had an impressive first game with six points and four rebounds. Hasan Abdullah also contributed six points to Navy’s total.

Bottom line: While ODU ran away with the game in the final ten minutes, Navy upped their defensive game in the second half and came out at halftime with fire.

Next up for Navy will by Maryland. Friday night’s game at Alumni Hall in Annapolis will be the Midshipmen’s home opener.
