Nats’ Wieters Has Hamstring Surgery

On Wednesday May 16, Nationals catcher Matt Wieters had surgery on his left hamstring. The team announced this surgery a day later.

Wieters is currently on the 10 day disabled list, but will be evaluated when he returns to Washington, and could be placed on the 60 day DL at that time.

With Wieters being on and off the DL this year, 24-year old Pedro Severino has been tasked with the starting catcher role, and has outhit Wieters so far. Severino is hitting a solid .274 compared to Wieters’ .231.

More updates will come after Wieters is evaluated by the Nationals’ doctors, but for now, the Nationals have called up 27 year old Spencer Kieboom from AAA to fill the backup role.
