Nats Sweep Doubleheader Over Phillies

After a weird postponement on Monday there was little hope the Washington Nationals and Philadelphia Phillies would get a game in on Tuesday with rain and a hurricane coming. Thankfully, they got both games in without suffering a single rain delay. The Nationals further dented the Phillies playoff chances by sweeping the doubleheader with a 3-1 win in the opener and a 7-6 comeback in the nightcap.

Spencer Kieboom, after losing his tooth coming to the batter’s box to pay tribute to the Stanley Cup champs, went yard for his first career MLB home run.

Erick Fedde shined in the first game of the doubleheader with nine strikeouts to earn the win, allowing just two hits and walks in 5.2 innings of work. Additionally, Fedde shined at the plate with his first MLB hit and scored on a Bryce Harper RBI single.

The Nats added a third run in the eighth with an RBI single from Ryan Zimmerman that scored Anthony Rendon. Juan Soto also made a catch along the railing that I’m sure Moises Alou wishes he made back in 2003. It was just the beginning of another memorable day watching the 19-year old phenom.

The Nats jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second game of the doubleheader with an RBI double from Soto that scored Rendon as well as a two-run homer.

The Phillies answered with a five-run fifth and would go up 6-3 on an eighth inning home run from Jose Bautista. The Nats came into the final inning trailing 6-3.

Rendon and Soto led off the ninth with a walk. Two batters later Matt Wieters singled home Rendon to make it a 6-4 game. After Zimmerman grounded into a force out it made the Nationals down to their last out. But they refused to go down. Andrew Stevenson singled home Soto to make it a one-run deficit. Adam Eaton walked to load the bases. With Trea Turner up, Luis Garcia (in for Seranthony Dominguez) surrendered a walk that tied the game and forced extra innings.

In the 10th, the legend of Juan Soto continued with his 18th home run of the season. He is now the ONLY teenager with three multi-homer games.

Tonight the Nats go for the sweep with Stephen Strasburg on the bump. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
