Nationals Swept By Blue Jays

Murphy’s Law states that what can go wrong, will go wrong. Such was the case for the Washington Nationals this weekend against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.

The series got off to a somewhat promising start on Friday night with Washington jumping out to a 2-0 lead after two innings. This however would be short-lived as the Blue Jays got a two run home run by Devon Travis to tie it up in the third inning before taking the lead on a solo home run by Yangervis Solarte-his first of two on the game-to give Toronto a 3-2 lead, a lead which they would not relinquish as they went on to win 6-5.

The Nationals looked to even up the series on Saturday behind their ace Max Scherzer. The Blue Jays pitching staff however had other ideas. Toronto held Washington to just three hits on the game with the only scoring coming by way of a two run home run by Devon Travis to give the Nationals a 2-0 loss, Scherzer’s second consecutive loss. This loss meant the Nationals would lose an interleague series for the first time this season in four attempts.

The Nationals tried to avoid a sweep on Sunday, jumping out to an early 3-1 lead. The Blue Jays however would once again have an answer for Washington, rallying for three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-3 lead. Toronto would not relinquish this lead, going on to win 8-6 on an uncharacteristically bad pitching weekend for the Nationals. Washington was swept in a series for the third time this season, but the first time away from Nationals Park, concluding the roadtrip at an abismal record of 1-4, and dropping the interleague record to 6-4.

The Nationals will return home for a doubleheader against the New York Yankees tomorrow.
