Nationals sweep doubleheader in 2-0 shutout victory against Rockies

A rain delay couldn't keep the Washington Nationals down as they ultimately swept their doubleheader against the Colorado Rockies with a 2-0 shutout win. Patrick Corbin shone in six innings by giving up only three hits and three walks and then striking out seven batters. Tanner Rainey, Tony Sipp, Fernando Rodney, and Sean Doolittle backed the starter with nearly flawless middle-to-late innings, with Doolittle earning his twenty-third save.

In the fourth inning, Victor Robles reached on a fielding error by Rockies second baseman Garrett Hampson and ultimately scored Brian Dozier. In the seventh, Yan Gomes provided an insurance solo home run to seal the victory, showing signs of a resurgence after posting a sub-2.00 batting average for much of the season.  With this win, the Nationals stand at 55-46, nine games above .500, and four games behind the Atlanta Braves.

Tomorrow, the Nationals hope to sweep the series with Max Scherzer returning from the injured list and starting against Jeff Hoffman. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. ET.
