Nationals rally late but fall to Rockies 8-7; recap 7/25/19

Despite a late-inning rally, the Washington Nationals fell to the Colorado Rockies in a close 8-7 loss. Max Scherzer's first night back from the injured list produced five innings in which he gave up four hits, three runs, and two walks and struck out eight batters. The bullpen provided shaky support with Matt Grace, Tanner Rainey, Tony Sipp, Wander Suero, and Fernando Rodney taking over for Scherzer. Rodney got his first blown save as a National after giving up a tie-breaking RBI groundout to Rockies infielder (and former National) Daniel Murphy to give the Rockies the only win of the series.

In the fifth inning, Anthony Rendon blasted a three-run home run to tie the game 3-3. In the sixth inning, Gerardo Parra began a small rally with an RBI double that scored Brian Dozier and Victor Robles. Trea Turner subsequently hit a single to score Parra to keep the Nationals on top by one. In the seventh, Matt Adams hit a solo insurance home run, but despite it all, the Rockies came out on top to prevent a sweep.

Tomorrow, Anibal Sanchez and Hyun-Jin Ryu will open the weekend series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET.
