Nationals Offense Explodes in 25-4 Rout Of Mets

For the Washington Nationals, the day began on a pedestrian note, as the only move the team made before the 4 PM trade deadline was dealing Brandon Kintzler to the Chicago Cubs. The day did not end on this note.

The Nationals began their offensive onslaught with a leadoff single by Trea Turner in the first inning. Trea was later driven in on a double by Bryce Harper-who was not traded today despite reportedly being available for trade-to give the Nationals a 1-0 lead. On the very next at bat, Ryan Zimmerman hit an RBI single to extend the Nationals lead to 2-0 and put Zimmerman in the history books. That first inning single was hit number 1,695 for Zimmerman, a franchise record. Later in the inning, the Mets walked Matt Wieters to face Tanner Roark with the bases loaded. Roark responded with a bases clearing double to put the Nationals up 7-0. Washington would end up piling on in a big way, getting out to a 19-0 lead after six innings. The night got so bad for the Mets that they used second baseman Jose Reyes as a pitcher in the eighth inning. The Nationals scored 6 runs off of Reyes en route to a 25-4 Nationals victory. The 25 runs was a Nationals franchise record for most runs scored in a game and hopefully it serves as momentum going forward.

Nationals will go for the sweep tomorrow as Tommy Milone takes the mound at 12:05 PM
