Nationals Make First September Call Ups

Since Saturday, the Nationals have made seven moves that will turn the 25-man roster into a 40-man roster. The Nats have activated pitchers Erick Fedde and Joe Ross from the 60-day disabled list. They called up to the big leagues pitchers Kyle McGowin and Austen Williams. And they recalled pitcher Austin Voth, catcher Pedro Severino, infielder Adrian Sanchez, and outfielder Victor Robles.

Fedde, who has made starts for the Nats this season as a fifth starter, was the first pick by the Nats in 2014. This season, he has a 5.79 ERA, has given up 62 hits, and 39 runs, with 19 strikeouts.

Ross returns after having Tommy John surgery after injuring his arm last August. Before being injured, the 24-year old had five wins and three losses, and 68 strikeouts. The young star acquired from San Diego hopes to have a huge comeback after coming off such a horrible arm injury.

McGowin was originally selected by the Angels in the fifth round of 2015, but was acquired by the Nats in the Danny Espinosa trade, along with teammate Trevor Gott. McGowin has a fastball, slider, and circle change in his arsenal.

Williams has played in one game this season, a loss to Milwaukee on Sunday. He was taken by the Nats in the sixth round of 2014. In his arsenal, he has a cutting fastball, a pitch that is tough to tell if it’s a curveball or slider, and a changeup that is sure to make hitters lose balance.

Voth has played already this season, but like Williams, in one game. He was credited with the loss on July 14th against the Mets. He has an MLB ERA of 14.54.

Severino returns after a stint in the minors. He has two home runs this season, with a .168 batting average, and 15 RBI. He is expected to be more of a fielding catcher than a hitting one.

Sanchez is back after being recalled up after Murphy and Adams’ trades, but was then sent back down when Strasburg came off the DL. He is a versatile infielder who can play any position in the infield.

Robles is the Nats’ top prospect, and the league’s number three. He started the season mostly on the DL after getting injured in April, and not coming back until August. If he, Soto, and Harper are able to play with each other in the outfield, you could see some exciting action for possibly the last month while Harper is here.
