Nationals fall to Mets 8-4; recap: 9/4/19

The Washington Nationals fell to the New York Mets 8-4 today, leaving the Nationals’ record at 78-60. Anibal Sanchez threw five innings that yielded eight hits, seven runs, three walks, and only two strikeouts. Hunter Strickland, Wander Suero, Fernando Rodney, and Sean Doolittle provided decent relief, save for one more earned run from Rodney. The Mets ultimately take this series as the Nationals move on to face their next division rival, the Atlanta Braves.

In the second inning, Trea Turner hit an RBI single that scored Gerardo Parra. In the sixth, Asdrubal Cabrera hit an RBI single that also scored Parra, and Anthony Rendon hit an RBI double that scored Andrew Stevenson. This proved to be a stark contrast to last night’s grand comeback, but it should not be a deterrent as the Nationals still remain at the top for the National League Wild Card game in October.

Tomorrow, Stephen Strasburg faces Max Fried at SunTrust Park in a critical weekend series against the Braves. First pitch is scheduled for 7:20 p.m. ET. The Nationals television broadcast will resume on MASN.
