Nationals fall to Cardinals 5-1; recap: 9/18/19

The Washington Nationals lost the series to the St. Louis Cardinals in a 5-1 loss. The Nationals now stand at 83-68 and are in danger of losing home field advantage in the Wild Card race, with the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers creeping close behind them. Max Scherzer threw seven innings that yielded seven hits, five runs, and eleven strikeouts.

The Cardinals’ winning rally occurred in the seventh inning, with former National Matt Wieters solidifying St. Louis’s win with a two-run home run. The Nationals’ only run came in the form of a Trea Turner RBI double in the seventh inning. The Nationals now have three remaining series left to climb back to contention caliber if they hope to put on a playoff show for the first time since 2017.

On Friday, Aníbal Sánchez will open the weekend Miami Marlins series against Robert Dugger. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 pm ET.
