Nationals Fall to Marlins, 3-2

Washington Nationals
Nationals fall to Marlins, 3-2, in Miami.

The Washington Nationals fell to the Miami Marlins, 3-2, Friday night in south Florida. Anibal Sanchez took the loss for the Nats who dropped to 9-8 on the season. The Marlins improved to 4-15 behind Caleb Smith’s second win of the season.

The night started off strong for the Nationals. Juan Soto singled in Adam Eaton in the first to take the early lead. In the second, however, Miami took advantage of a Ryan Zimmerman error to tie the score at one.

The Marlins grabbed the lead with two gift runs in the sixth inning. Sanchez gave up a bases-loaded walk to Martin Prado, scoring Miguel Rojas from third. Matt Grace came in from the bullpen for Washington and promptly hit Curtin Granderson to force in Isaac Galloway for the second Miami run of the inning.

Brian Dozier brought the Nats to within one with a seventh inning home run off of Nick Anderson, but Washington floundered from there.

On Saturday, Washington’s Max Scherzer (1-2; 3.33 ERA) will face Miami’s Jose Urena (0-3; 6.53 ERA) in the second game of the three-game set in Miami.
