Nationals clinch home field for Wild Card with a 10-7 win against Indians; recap: 9/28/19

The Washington Nationals beat the Cleveland Indians 10-7 and clinched home field for the Wild Card set for Tuesday night. Patrick Corbin threw four innings that yielded seven hits, six runs, two walks, and eight strikeouts. Thankfully, the bullpen (Wander Suero, Javy Guerra, Fernando Rodney, Daniel Hudson, and Sean Doolittle) pulled through with preventing the Indians from coming back. With home field clinched, the Nationals can hopefully rest their main players for Tuesday and allow tomorrow to be more relaxed for the season finale.

The second inning proved to be the biggest difference maker in this entire game. Alone, the Nationals scored nine runs in the following ways:

  1. Patrick Corbin hit an RBI single to score Ryan Zimmerman.
  2. Adam Eaton hit an RBI single to score Yan Gomes.
  3. Anthony Rendon hit a 2-RBI double to score Gomes and Corbin.
  4. Asdrubal Cabrera hit an RBI single to score Eaton.
  5. Gerardo Parra hit a grand slam to center field.

To secure the win, Ryan Zimmerman hit an RBI single to score Juan Soto in the fourth inning.

Tomorrow, Joe Ross faces Mike Clevinger for the main season finale. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. ET.
