Nationals Avoid the Sweep 2-1 Against the Cardinals 5/2 Game Recap

Washington D.C.- With a start time more than two hours later than the original, baseball in D.C. was finally underway. The Nationals were looking to avoid the sweep at home for the first time since 2009 against the Chicago Cubs.

-The Cardinals were first to get on the board with a Kolten Wong RBI, in the top of the third inning.

-Fourth inning, zero outs and two on base, a Yan Gomes RBI ties the game when the relay from short stop to first baseman went awry. Following, Matt Adams came in to score on the double play making the sore 2-1, Nats.

-Stephen Strasburg recorded his 1500th strikeout tonight as stands as the quickest in MLB history to do so.

-Bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, PH Paul Goldschmidt in the box against closer Sean Doolittle, is called out on strikes which was a big mark in what could have changed the tide of the game at that point.

The Nationals won the game 2-1 and managed to avoid the sweep. The 13-17 club will look forward to their series with the Philadelphia Phillies that begins on the fourth of May.
