Nationals Avoid Sweep with 2-1 Win Over Braves

1024px-9TH_Bryce_HarperJust one week ago Matt Williams and the Nationals celebrated a memorable opening series sweep of the Mets at Citi Field. Yesterday they fought to avoid being swept by the Braves at Nationals Park, pulling out a nail-biting 2-1 win.

With Ryan Zimmerman out due to shoulder inflammation, Bryce Harper struggling at the plate and other setbacks, the first week of the season has been an unsteady one. However, the Nats’ pitching continues to be a notable positive.

Taylor Jordan gave an impressive first performance of his 2014 season in yesterday’s game, allowing the Braves just one earned run. Although Matt Williams would rest the majority of the regular Nats’ starters, leaving the Braves at a potential offensive advantage, Jordan expressed his confidence when asked after the game if William’s move concerned him:

“Whoever is playing or not, I still have to perform, I still have to do what I’m supposed to do, and that’s put up zeros.”

And that’s exactly what he did.

Looking back at his starts last season and in spring training, it’s becoming more and more evident that Taylor Jordan’s contributions to the Nationals’ starting pitching give their chances to be serious contenders late in the season a huge boost.

This Tuesday at Nationals Park, Gio Gonzalez will take the mound to start off a three-game series against the Marlins.
