MSB Predicts the CFP Rankings

We’re approaching the very end of college football season, with conference championships coming up this weekend. Here’s where all of the potential playoff teams stand, as well as several MSB writers’ predictions for tomorrow night’s College Football Playoff Rankings Top 6.

In alphabetical order:

Alabama – The Crimson Tide are in a really tough spot. They won’t be playing in the SEC Championship after their loss to Auburn, and a lot will depend on how much the committee drops them following that ‘quality loss’. They no longer control their own destiny.

Auburn – If they can beat Georgia for the second time this season in the SEC Championship, the Tigers will likely be headed to the playoffs despite their two previous losses. It depends partially on how they’re ranked tomorrow night, but they should be in the top four.

Clemson – Clemson’s in a great place. If they beat Miami this weekend in the ACC Championship, they’re guaranteed a spot.

Georgia – The Bulldogs have a tough battle this weekend in the SEC Championship against Auburn, but it’s hard to imagine a scenario where the SEC Champion doesn’t make the playoff. Win and they’re in, but that’s easier said than done against a team who previously demolished them.

Miami – They’ll very likely be on the outside looking in tomorrow night, but if they take down Clemson this weekend, they should be secure.

Ohio State – The Buckeyes have the ugliest loss of any of these teams, as well as a loss to Oklahoma, which should perpetually rank them below the Sooners. They have essentially no chance of jumping in, even by beating undefeated Wisconsin.

Oklahoma – The Sooners simply need to beat TCU in the Big 12 Championship to ensure their spot in the playoff.

TCU – TCU will likely need some help to get in, as I’m not sure a win over Oklahoma will push them to where they need to go. They’ll need plenty of chaos to ensue to get a spot.

Wisconsin – The Badgers continue to be hurt by their poor strength of schedule. Facing Ohio State this weekend in the Big 10 Championship could give them the quality win they need to push them over the edge.
