McNaney and Bernhardt Lead Maryland Past Ohio State and A Local Recap

Top ranked Maryland used a seven goal run between the second and third quarters to beat Ohio State 18-8. Jared Bernhardt started the run with a natural hat trick. He scored six and added an assist for the day. Logan McNaney had 12 saves in the cage but also scored a goal into an empty net from 60 yards out. Ohio State was in the 10 man ride and up two men at the time. Daniel Maltz had four goals and one assist while Kyle Long had four assists. Trey LeClaire and Johnny Wiseman had two goals each in a losing effort for the 4-5 Buckeyes. Maryland is 9-0 for the first time since 1987 and has clinched the top seed in the Big Ten tournament. Before that they close the season at Johns Hopkins next Saturday at 2pm on ESPNU.


In Baltimore Navy knocked off #15 Loyola 14-12. It’s the Mids first win ever at Loyola. The Greyhounds scored six straight goals the 4:15 mark of the 3rd quarter to the 4:59 mark in the fourth to erase a 12-6 deficit. Navy LSM Jeff Durden scored with 4:50 left then Christian Daniel beat a double team to seal it at the 1:28 mark. Daniel dished out five assists to go with that goal. Navy (4-2, 2-2) got hat tricks from Dane Swanson and Jack Sweeney. Loyola got 4 goals from Evan James and three goals plus an assist from Kevin Lindley. While this game counted as a Patriot League game it wasn’t a south division contest so Lehigh and Loyola will represent the south in the PL tournament barring a last minute format change. Navy hosts Army next Saturday at noon while Loyola heads to Lafayette for their last regular season PL game.

Towson stayed hot with a 9-6 win at UMASS. The Tigers have won 3 straight and 4 out of 5 to even their record at 6-6. They are also 3-3 in the CAA which ties them with Hofstra and the Minutemen. Ryan Swain had three goals for the Tigers and Shane Brennan had 13 saves in the cage. Some of the spectacular variety. Towson returns home to host Delaware and Drexel in their last two games. Those teams sit in first and second place respectively. The top 4 teams in the league qualify for the tournament on May 6th & 8th at Hofstra.

UMBC rebounded from their loss to Albany with a 12-7 win over UMASS Lowell. The Retrievers are 6-2 overall and 5-2 in the America East. That puts them in third place a half game ahead of Vermont and a game ahead of Albany. Brett McIntyre and Ryan Frawley had 3 goals each in the win. Nick Dupuis had a goal and 3 assists while Trevor Patschorke had two and two. The Retrievers head to Stony Brook next Saturday. The first matchup was a 4 OT classic won by the Retrievers 13-12. It is the only conference loss for the Sea Wolves.

Other local action Johns Hopkins continued to struggle in a 16-11 loss at Rutgers. The game was tied at 11 but Adam Charalampides scored three straight for the Scarlet Knights to end the third quarter and never looked back. The Blue Jays are 2-7 and have top ranked Maryland coming to Homewood next Saturday for a 2pm start. Mount St. Mary’s lost 17-15 to Long Island. The Mountaineers fell to 3-9 and host Wagner on Saturday.
