Maryland Terps Women’s Field Hockey: Maryland vs Rutgers

In yesterday afternoons season finale, the Maryland Terrapins absolutely gutted the twenty-first ranked Rutgers Scarlett Knights, winning 6-0. With the victory the lady Terps locked up the second seed in the Big Ten tournament. Junior Melissa Wilken and Sophomore Madison Maguire both netted their first career hat tricks in Sundays victory. Maryland outshot Rutgers seventeen to five and Junior goalkeeper Sarah Holliday made the only save needed on the day.

Wilken opened the high scoring affair in the seventh minute when she recovered a loose ball rebound and tipped it in. In the twenty-fifth minute Wilken extended the Terps’ lead to 2-0 after she sent a shot from ten yards out into the empty side of the net. Maguire than grabbed her first goal of the night on an assist from Freshman Kyler Greenwalt, as she found herself able to score right in front of the net. This sent the Terps into halftime with a 3-0 lead.

Only twelve minutes into the second half, Wilken finished off her hat trick thanks to a pass from Junior Linnea Gonzales on the left side, giving Maryland a four goal advantage. Less than five minutes later, Maguire, accompanied by fifth year Senior Brook Adler on a two on one, scored her second goal of the night. Only sixty-five seconds later Maguire capped off her three goal performance, tipping in a shot from five yards out.

This was Maryland’s sixth consecutive win and their fourth straight against a top twenty-five ranked opponent. Over the last two weeks the Terps have defeated, twenty-fifth ranked Ohio State, sixth ranked Penn State, third ranked Virginia, and of course twenty-first ranked Rutgers. Maryland outscored those four teams 16-6.

Terps Freshman Bodil Keus was named Big Ten Freshman of the week for the second time this season.

Maryland (12-5, 6-2) opens the Big Ten tournament when they host the seventh seeded Michigan State Spartans (8-10, 2-6) at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex in College Park. The matchup can be seen on Sunday at one pm.
