Maryland Basketball Officially Signs It’s 2023 Recruiting Class

Maryland Basketball has it’s first official recruiting class signed under new head coach Kevin Willard. On National Signing Day, 4-star recruits DeShawn Harris-Smith, Jamie Kaiser, and Jahnathan Lamothe all signed their official letters of intent to play for the Terrapins in 2023. Perhaps most importantly, all three are local to the DMV.

Harris-Smith is a 6′ 5″ small forward out of Fairfax who plays for Paul VI High School. He is considered to be the top recruit in Virginia. Kaiser, a 6′ 6″ small forward, plays his high school ball at IMG Academy in Florida, but is from Alexandria. ESPN Recruiting has him ranked the #2 player to hail from Virginia. Lamothe is a 6′ 4″ shooting guard out of Baltimore and St. Frances Academy. He is the #3 player out of Maryland according to 247Sports.

With these signings, 247Sports has Coach Willard’s 2023 class currently ranked #11 nationally. More important than projected rankings to some Terps’ fans is the fact that all three recruits are local products. The DMV has been widely considered one of the hotbeds for high school players for many years. However, under previous head coach Mark Turgeon, the local talent had gone elsewhere.

As these new look Terps continue to take shape, expect Willard to continue his focus on recruiting local talent from both the high school level and through the transfer portal.
