Maryland Soccer loses for the first time in a while

The Terps men’s soccer team had not lost a regular season home game in almost exactly two years (October 20th, 2015) coming into their much-anticipated clash with #13 Georgetown. The Hoyas made sure that was no longer the case on Tuesday night winning a defensive battle 1-0.

Maryland was without their usual starting wing backs for the game, as Chase Casper was out with a groin strain and George Campbell was suspended for the game after receiving a red card in Maryland’s last game at Wisconsin. These absences were very apparent during the game, as Georgetown was able to attack up the flanks with ease for most of the game. Ever the strategist, Sasho Cirovski countered the flank problem by collapsing the back line into the box and simply keeping the play in front of them. This type of play was anchored all night by the all-Big10 defender Donovan Pines who was efficient in his clearances.

The Maryland Forwards created chances all night, outshooting the Hoyas 12-6 with 8 shots on target. However, they couldn’t once find the back of the net. This isn’t to say the Terps didn’t have good chances, as Georgetown goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski made save after brilliant save. In the 74th minute midfielder Eryk Williamson fired a point blank shot off the crossbar in what would end up as the Terps’ best opportunity of the night.

the Decisive goal came in the 88th minute from Georgetown forward Jacob Montes. Maryland had been pressing trying to get their own game-winner which left them overexposed on the counter. When the ball got chipped into the box for Montes for a 1-on-1 with the keeper, a perfect finish was all that remained for a 1-0 victory. The loss ended a 30 game regular season unbeaten streak for the terps at home in Ludwig.

Maryland will try to rebound at home on Friday at 7pm against Coastal Carolina.
