Maryland Public High Schools Will Begin Sports On December 7th

The Maryland State Board of Education has voted to move the start date for high school sports up from February 1st 2021 to December 7th. The new schedule is winter sports start practice on December 7th and competition on January 4th. The season would run through February 13th which is when practice for fall sports starts. That season would run through April 19th which is when spring sports practice starts. That season runs through June 19th.

A team must have 20 days of practice before games are played. The last competition for the public schools was the state basketball quarterfinals on March 7th. Last month Governor Hogan announced schools could start practice on October 7th and games on October 27th. Most school systems didn’t feel comfortable starting that soon. This change allows the seasons to be the same length of time. Like everything else these dates are subject to change based on Covid 19.
