Maryland Mens Soccer Blanks Penn State

Yesterday the undefeated, third ranked Maryland Terrapins entered hostile territory and put their perfect 6-0-1 record up against a tough Penn State Nittany Lions team. The first half of the match was a snooze fest as neither team could put the ball into the net. Maryland had chances to score in the first half but they just could not make the most of their opportunities. Midfielder Jake Rozhansky had a chance to put the Terps up but had his shot blocked by Penn State goalkeeper Evan Finney. Not long after Amar Sejdic had another chance to score from ten yards out but again Finney made an incredible stop.

Finally, in the forty-fifth minute Junior Sebastian Elney scored what would ultimately be the game winner. Elney sent the ball into the back of the net from a few yards away on a end line pass from Rozhansky. The Terps finally broke down a mingy Nittany Lions defense and ended up extending their shutout streak to four consecutive games, with a final of 2-0.

Junior Eryk Willliamson had an assist and a scored a goal of his own in the eighty-ninth minute. Maryland had the advantage in both shots, eight to two and shots on goal, five to one, including a four to one advantage in the first half. This was because the Terps won the possession battle controlling the ball for most of the ninety minute contest. The shutout extends the Terps’ opponent scoreless streak to an impressive three-hundred and ninety-seven minutes.

The Terrapins return to the football pitch Friday evening as they square off against the number six ranked Michigan State Spartans.
