Maryland Falls To Fifth Ranked Wisconsin

Saturday afternoon the Maryland Terrapins squared off against the number five ranked Wisconsin Badgers (7-0, 4-0) at Camp Randall stadium. Maryland, coming off a big home loss against Northwestern, was looking to pull off the major upset on the road. However, Wisconsin had other plans defeating the Terps 38-13. Terps’ quarterback Max Bortenschlager had a dismal day completing 13-30, for 125 yards, an interception, and one touchdown, while being sacked twice.

The running back duo of Ty Johnson and Lorenzo Harrison Jr. continued to shine for Maryland, combining for 147 yards and splitting the carries 16-12 in Johnson’s favor. Senior wide receiver Taivon Jacobs led the way in receiving for Maryland finishing with five receptions, for 45 yards, and the Terps’ lone touchdown of the game.

Maryland controlled the ball for the majority of the first quarter but, were still trailing because of a Wisconsin pick-six returned fifty-four yards by Wisconsin linebacker T.J. Edwards. Wisconsin would never look back as they held the lead for the entirety of the game.

Maryland would get on the board on a twenty-three yard field goal by kicker Henry Darmstadter to begin the second quarter. Wisconsin answered five minutes later on a three yard touchdown run by Freshman Jonathan Taylor extending the Badgers’ lead to 14-3. Late in the first half Wisconsin scored again, this time on an Alex Hornibrook, eight yard touchdown pass to Junior receiver Zander Neuville. After a missed field goal by Darmstadter, Maryland entered halftime trailing 21-3.

The Badgers came right out of halftime and extended their lead to 28-3 thanks to Alex Hornibrook’s second touchdown of the game, an eighteen yards pass to receiver AJ Taylor. Maryland pulled within eighteen after Max Bortenschlager’s ten yard touchdown pass to Tavon Jacobs. Darmstadter than converted on his second field goal of the game to cut the Badgers’ lead to fifteen.

In the fourth quarter Wisconsin would add on a touchdown on a one yard run by running back Austin Ramesh, extending their lead to 35-13. One final field goal by Wisconsin kicker Rafael Gaglianone would put the finishing touches on a dominant performance for the Badgers.

Maryland’s defense did force two turnovers in the game. One on an interception by Senior defensive back Josh Woods and the second on Wisconsin’s running back, Jonathan Taylor’s fumble, recovered by Darnell Savage Jr.

Maryland (3-4, 1-3) returns home next week to host the Indiana Hoosiers (3-3, 0-3) on homecoming weekend. The game is set for a 3:30 start.
