Late lead blown again, Orioles fall 8-6 game recaps 5/24/19

John Means got the start tonight out in Colorado, and the Orioles bats benefited from the high altitude.

John Means pitched a solid five innings, allowing three runs off of seven hits. Means also struck out four and kept his ERA under 3.

Nolan Arenado of the Rockies got to Means in the first inning, homering to left to give the Rockies a 1-0 lead.

Keon Broxton, who was just acquired earlier this week by the Orioles, hit a monster two run homerun in the very first pitch he saw in an Orioles uniform. This gave the Birds a 2-1 lead in the second.

Pedro Severino added to that lead with a rbi double later in the second.

Dwight Smith Jr would hit his ninth homerun on the season giving the Orioles a 4-1 lead in the third. Jonathan Villar kept the scoring coming in the fourth with a rbi off his twelfth double of the year.

John Means allowed the Rockies to within two in the fourth, but kept the game at 5-3 until he exited the game after the fifth inning.

Renato Nunez stayed hot and went deep in the seventh, extending the Orioles lead now to 6-3.

Shawn Armstrong came into pitch in the seventh inning when he gave up back to back homeruns that tied the ballgame at 6.

The Orioles would blow another late lead, allowing Trevor Story to hit a walkoff homerun in the bottom of the ninth to take game one 8-6.

Mychal Givens took the loss (0-3).
