Juan Soto’s home run gives Nationals late 4-3 victory over Phillies

The Washington Nationals salvaged a series win against the Philadelphia Phillies tonight with a 4-3 win. Despite a shaky start from Patrick Corbin (six innings, six hits, three runs/earned runs, two walks, and 10 strikeouts), the bullpen prevented the Phillies from scoring any further. Tony Sipp, Tanner Rainey, Matt Grace, Wander Suero, and Sean Doolittle all pitched shutout relief innings, with Doolittle earning his twentieth save.

In the sixth inning, Victor Robles hit a RBI single that scored Ryan Zimmerman, and in the eighth, Robles reached on a fielding error that scored Juan Soto. Most notably, however, was Soto's two-run home run in the ninth inning. The Nationals were down to their final out when Soto hit the game-saving home run and gave Doolittle the save opportunity and the team a series win.

Tomorrow, the Nationals will look to sweep the Phillies with Anibal Sanchez against Jake Arrieta. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 pm ET.
