Joseph on a power surge

Caleb_Joseph_on_June_30,_2014When the Baltimore Orioles placed Matt Wieters on the disabled list they made a tough decision to call up Caleb Joseph and option Steve Clevenger. Joseph had never played at the Major League level and looked lost swinging the bat. Joseph did however play outstanding defense and really helped turn the Orioles starting pitching around.

Now Joseph is starting to figure things out at the plate and has homered in three-straight games that that he has started. Joseph has shown his power at the minor league level, hitting 74 home runs in the minors. Joseph now has six home runs on the season and is on pace for around ten home runs which is really more than anyone could have asked from the rookie catcher. Remember it is not easy replacing Wieters, who many think is one of the best catchers in the game.

Joseph has finally raised his average above .200 and has provided power at the bottom of the lineup. While the middle of the lineup is struggling the top and the bottom of the Orioles lineup has been coming through. Nick Markakis, Manny Machado and Caleb Joseph have been hitting the ball well for the past week and have carried the offense.

Let’s hope Joseph can keep swinging the bat the way he is because it is a huge bonus to the Orioles.  The Orioles can not ask for much more than what they have gotten from Joseph.  The more he figures out big league pitching the better he will be.

Updated: Joseph has now hit a home run in four straight games.  That ties Jay Gibbons record for an Orioles rookie with the most consecutive games with a home run.
