Johns Hopkins M-Soccer & McDaniel W-Volleyball Are October 27th Division III Best Performers

Friday night saw two Division III schools have major victories as both Johns Hopkins men’s soccer team and the McDaniel Green Terror women’s volleyball team both looked to take their victories into the separate conference tournaments, here is a more in-depth at each victory:

JOHNS HOPKINS BLUE JAYS Men’s Soccer – Division III Centennial Conference

BALTIMORE, Md.- At Homewood Field in front of 250 fans, Johns Hopkins ended their regular season with a 3-0 defeat of the Dickinson Red Devils and securing the #1 seed in the upcoming 2017 Centennial Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament.

Sophomore D Connor Jacobs had a goal in each half and Senior M/F Mike Swiercz scored on a penalty kick for the Blue Jays (14-1-2; 7-0-2 Centennial Conference).  Senior GK Bryan See ended the regular season on a three-game consecutive streak of not allowing a goal and had four saves against the Red Devils (10-5-2; 4-2-2 Centennial Conference).

For the first time since 2011, Johns Hopkins enters the Conference Tournament as the #1 seed.  Controlling it’s own destiny with home-field advantage, Johns Hopkins will host a semi-final game next Friday against the winner of the first round match-up between the Dickinson Red Devils and the Haverford Fords.  Game times for the semi-finals will be announced on Monday.

MCDANIEL GREEN TERROR Women’s Volleyball – Division III Centennial Conference

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – McDaniel women’s volleyball team did it’s part to secure a spot in the upcoming 2017 Centennial Conference Women’s Volleyball Tournament by sweeping the Ursinus Bears, three sets to none (25-20; 25-23; 25-18).

The Green Terror (18-7; 6-4 Centennial Conference) now needs Swarthmore to defeat Haverford on Saturday to secure the #5 seed in the tournament.

With a chance of pulling off a major upset in their final regular season game, the Bears (6-18; 0-9 Centennial Conference) started the first set on a 5-2 run after Sophomore MB Miranda Foster’s kill gave Ursinus the seventh point in the set.  McDaniel would go on it’s own mini 4-0 run that was capped off by Green Terror Junior S Lauren Well’s kills and gave McDaniel a 6-5 lead.

Later on, the final tie of the first set occurred at 16-16.  McDaniel would end the first set on a 9-4 run and took the set, 25-20 on Junior OH Allie Lugar’s kill.  That put the Green Terror up one set to none.

Deja vu ruled the first seven points of the second set as the Bears started out again leading 5-2 on Bears Senior OH Allison Raff’s kill.  The Green Terror battled back to tie the set at 10-10 on an setting error by Bears Sophomore S Kelly Piotrowicz.  Last tie occurred at 15-15 and on the first set point for McDaniel was squandered by Freshman MH Emma Lorenzen’s attack error.  Lorenzen redeemed herself on the next point, recording the kill and giving McDaniel the second set, 25-23 and a two sets to none lead.

McDaniel came out strong in the third set, beginning it off with a 7-2 lead courtesy of Freshman L Kendall Hanak’s kill.  Another Rath kill ended a McDaniel 7-3 run to give the Green Terror a 14-5 advantage.

Down 18-9, Ursinus had a mini 4-0 run and on McDaniel’s Sophomore MH Hayley Mills’ attack error pulled the Bears to within 18-13.

A 5-0 run by McDaniel made the score 23-13.  Ursinus was able to save the first two match points but on the third match point, at 24-18, Rath had another Green Terror kill to give McDaniel the set, 25-18 and take the match, three sets to none.
