Jaxon Player Leads #22 Tulsa To A 19-6 Win Over Navy

Tulsa nose guard Jaxon Player pretty much shut down the Navy (3-6, 3-4 in the AAC) offense and led Tulsa to a 19-6 win on senior day in Annapolis. He got great jumps most of the day which helped him get 12 tackles, 2 sacks, and 4 tackles for loss. The Golden Hurricane finished with 5 sacks as a team and held Navy to 153 total yards and 126 on the ground.

Navy started freshman Xavier Arline at quarterback. He showed flashes starting late in the first half with a couple good runs to set up a field goal by Bijan Nichols to cut the halftime deficit to 6-3. Arline had 27 carries for 60 yards. Nelson Smith was held to 12 carries for 33 yards. He had been most of the production coming into the game for Navy. The loss snaps a 17 game win streak on senior day for the Midshipmen.

The Navy defense played well for the second consecutive game. They gave up one big play which was a 66 yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. That was the only TD of the game. Zach Smith was 10-25 through the air for 168 yards and that touchdown. Tulsa (6-1, 6-0) was well balanced with 128 yards rushing in addition to the 168 passing for 296 total.

Tulsa is scheduled to play 7th ranked Cincinnati next week to finish their regular season. The same two teams will meet the following week in the AAC Championship Game. Navy meanwhile moves on to the Army/Navy game next week in West Point, New York. Navy is hoping to beat Army and have the Black Knights beat Air Force on 12/19 to retain the CIC Trophy. If Army beats Navy the winner of their game with Air Force will take the trophy. Kickoff is at 3pm on CBS
