Jakub Vrana Saves Day for Capitals

The Capitals have been playing well recently and were looking to continue that trend against the Devils on Tuesday night. Through two periods the Capitals were flying around and had built a 4-1 lead. The Devils came to play however in the third, and tied the game to force overtime. Luckily for the Caps, Jakub Vrana came through and saved the day in OT.

The Capitals owned much of the first two periods and had built a lead following goals from T.J. Oshie, Jakub Vrana, Daniel Sprong, and Dmitry Orlov. They had been playing excellent offense and great defense. Nicklas Backstrom and Evgeny Kuznetsov both recorded two assists on the night. Kuznetsov is now three points shy of 400 career points. John Carlson also recorded an assist leaving him one point shy of 500 for his career.

In the third period, things changed drastically. The ice became heavily tilted in the Devils favor as they scored three to tie things up. The Devils were flying around and could not be stopped in the third as they forced overtime.

Luckily for the Capitals, Jakub Vrana bagged the game-winner 90 seconds into overtime. It was his second goal of the night and his fifth goal in the last six games. Vrana is now tied for the team lead with Nicklas Backstrom with 10 goals apiece.

In a division as stacked as the Eastern Conference is, every point matters. The Capitals survived a comeback bid and were able to secure two points. They are currently sitting in second place in the East, two points behind the New York Islanders.

The Capitals will be back in action again on Thursday (3/11) in Philadelphia against the fifth-place Flyers.
