Is Pedroia Quitting on the Red Sox?

Recently, the Red Sox shut down one of their few remaining leaders in Dustin Pedroia, due to wrist and hand soreness – surely something he could play through if the Red Sox were in the hunt.  Regardless, Pedroia will get surgery and be out for the rest of the season.

Pedroia, like a lot of Red Sox players, is having a down season – only hitting seven home runs resulting in a sub .280 average. The former MVP surely is not putting up MVP numbers. David Ortiz is one of the few veteran Red Sox players left and his leadership is questionable at best.

The Red Sox were recently swept by the Baltimore Orioles and I can totally see why Pedroia would opt to shut things down a little early; but a true leader would suck things up and stay around to mentor some of the younger players. A lot of other athletes in different sports, like hockey and football, play through more injuries than hand soreness.

The lack of leadership and team chemistry has hurt the Red Sox in the past; although, they have lucked out and won a few World Series in the past few years, but they’ve also had some very bad seasons. Personally, I think Pedroia could have finished the season.
