Invicta Phoenix Rising: Strawweight Tournament

Flashback Friday is in full effect today as Invicta brings back an old staple to mixed martial arts. Phoenix Rising is a one night eight Woman tournament to crown the new strawweight champion. While you might have seen similar tournaments in the UFC in the past this is the first time that Invicta has held this thrilling event. The rounds are set up differently due to athletic commission rules so let’s take a look at the tournament design.

Due to the Kansas State athletic commission regulations, fighters are only allowed to compete in a maximum of 25 minutes per night. The single-elimination tournament will feature one-round fights in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, with the tournament final being a three-round affair to determine the tournament champion.

Eight talented young Women have been selected to compete tonight. While two original participants were unable to make weight, replacement fighters had been put in place and were training and ready to fill their spots in the event of injury or issues making weight. Let’s take a look at the quarterfinal round of this exciting one night tournament.

Tournament favorites (10-2) Janaisa Morandin and (13-5) Mizuki Inoue both missed weight and will not compete in the title tournament tonight.

(10-4) Danielle Taylor vs (9-5) Juliana Lima

(4-6) Kailin Curran vs (3-0) Sunna Davidsdottir

(11-2) Manjit Kolekar vs (5-2) Brianna Van Buren

(7-5) Amber Brown vs (5-4) Sharon Jacobson

Tournament alternate match features
(5-2) Alyssa Krahn vs (4-2) Itzel Esquivel

Strawweight showcase match
