INF Freddy Galvis and Baltimore Orioles Agree to a One-Year Deal

Orioles reach agreement with 2021 SS

The Baltimore Orioles and veteran infielder Freddy Galvis have agreed to a one year deal paying the shortstop $1.5 million. Galvis has a career .247 average, while accumulating 95 HRs and 386 RBIs over his nine year big league career. The Orioles were expected to sign an infielder after trading Jose Iglesias to the Los Angeles Angles for right handed pitchers Garret Stallings and Jean Pinto. Although nagged by injuries and a shortened season,  Iglesias batted .373 over 142 at-bats. Galvis is not going to put up number like J.J. Hardy in his prime with the club, but should solidify the shortstop position, which has been shaky since the Manny Machado trade.

Freddy Galvis began his MLB career with the Philadelphia Philles, playing for the National League East club for six seasons. Since 2018, the 31 year old has played for the San Diego Padres, Toronto Blue Jays, and Cincinnati Reds. Galvis’ best year came in 2019 with the Toronto Blue Jays hitting .267 with 18 HR and 54 RBIs. Galvis is best known for his glove totaling a .984 fielding percentage over his nine year career.

The Baltimore Orioles have been in a rebuild ever since former manager Buck Showalter parted was with the club in 2018. The Orioles have not had a winning season since 2016, when the American League East club went 89-73. The AL East is historically the best division in all of baseball, with teams such as the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. The reality is the Orioles have to have to build their organization through the draft, since the O’s are a small market team. With the Yankees recently signing Garrit Cole to a $324 million deal and the Tampa Bay Rays making the 2020 World Series, the Orioles have been forced to rebuild and play for the future.
