Huge offensive night fuels Orioles, take game one over Rangers 12-11: Game recap 6/4/19

The Orioles started a three-game set in Texas tonight, and they wasted no time putting runs on the board.

Dwight Smith Jr. started it off with a monster three-run home run in the first. That gave the O’s a 3-0 lead. Pedro Severino came up next and went back-to-back, hitting a solo home run to go up 4-0 in the first.

Dylan Bundy pitched well tonight, going five innings and allowing three runs off six hits. Bundy allowed one run in the first, third, and fourth innings.

The Orioles would tack on one more in the second off Trey Mancini’s sacrifice fly to take a 5-1 lead.

The Orioles would have another four run inning in the fourth. Keon Broxton sent his third home run out of the park. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Dwight Smith Jr. picked up another three RBI in a double that extended the Orioles lead to 9-2. Smith’s six RBI game is a new career high.

Pedro Severino would continue his hot night, hitting his second home run of the game. This two-run shot in the seventh gave the O’s an 11-3 lead.

Branden Kline came on to pitch in the seventh, allowing one run to cut the Oriole lead to 11-4.

Pedro Severino came up in the ninth inning, and the kid hit his third home run of the night! What a game for Severino! That gave the Orioles a 12-5 lead in the ninth inning. Severino is the first catcher in Orioles history to hit three home runs in a single game.

The Rangers made it interesting in the ninth inning, scoring three on a double, then another on a single. That cut the Orioles’ lead to 12-8 with no outs in the ninth.

Things got too close when the Rangers scored two more runs to cut the lead to 12-10. There still were no outs at this point.

Mychal Givens comes on to pitch with one out in the ninth. Givens tries to pick off the runner at first and throws the ball away, allowing the tying run to get into scoring position. Givens eventually gets the strikeout for the second out. Orioles catcher Pedro Severino, who already hit three home runs in this game, made a stellar defensive play, throwing out Elvis Andrus at first on a passed ball strike three for the final out.

The Orioles held on to win this one 12-11. The Orioles had 15 hits, five of which were home runs. Dylan Bundy gets the win and moves to 3-6.

Catch the Orioles for game two of this series Wednesday at 8:05 p.m. ET.
