Hopkins Saves It’s Season With An OT Win Over Mount Saint Mary’s
Johns Hopkins only led once in 62 minutes of lacrosse. Lucky for them it was when it mattered most. Owen Murphy came from behind the goal to score the game winner with 1:44 left in overtime to give the Blue Jays a 13-12 win over Mount St. Mary’s. The Mountaineers scored the first three goals of the game and would lead 12-8 with five minutes left in the game. That’s when Johns Hopkins would start the comeback to keep their season alive. Garrett Degnon and Kyle Prouty scored 11 seconds apart to cut the lead to 12-10. Cole Williams scored the next two goals to tie the game at 12.
With eight minutes left in regulation the Mountaineers (3-5) seemed to take their foot off the gas when they started milking the clock instead of trying to score. They scored one extra man goal the rest of the game. Brendan Doyle (3G, 1A) and Brenden McCarthy (2G, 2A) both had four point nights while Dylan Furnback had 14 saves.
Johns Hopkins (2-4) was led by Williams (4G, 1A) and Murphy (1G, 4A). Ryan Darby made nine saves with a couple of the spectacular variety thrown in. Prouty went 20-8 in face-offs to help the Jays stay in the game. The downside for Hopkins was 21 turnovers committed. Those including moving picks, bad decisions in the clearing game and some sloppy passes. Hopkins outshot The Mount 41-33 and ground balls were tied at 33.
Johns Hopkins heads to Annapolis to renew their rivalry with Navy after a couple year break. Bill Belichick will be presented the key to the city during halftime of the game, It will be a noon start on Saturday.
