Hess roughed up by Rays

St. Petersburg — It just wasn’t David Hess’ night. The Orioles starter was roughed up by the Tampa Bay Rays, in an 8-1 loss at Tropicana Field Wednesday night.

Hess (L, 1-3) allowed eight hits and six runs, including three home runs in just two innings of work.

Tampa Bay got out of the gate strong. Hess allowed singles the two of the first three Rays batters, but was one out away from getting out of the inning after a line out by third baseman Yandy Diaz.

Unfortunately for Hess, Rays second baseman Brandon Lowe was not going to allow him off so easy, as he deposited a three-run home run into the right field stands.

Even when Hess recorded outs, his pitches were hit hard.

The first two Rays reached in the second inning, on a double and RBI single, pushing the lead to 4-0.

Hess came out for the 3rd inning, but allowed solo home runs to first baseman Ji-Man Choi and Diaz to lead off the inning.

Manager Brandon Hyde had seen enough at that point and called upon right hander Josh Lucas to relieve Hess, trailing, 6-0.

An RBI single by Rays center fielder Kevin Kiermaier in the bottom of the 5th off left hander Tanner Scott extended the lead to 7-0.

The Rays employed the “opener” strategy as right hander Ryne Stanek pitched the first inning.

Stanek was relieved by right hander Yonny Chirinos (W, 3-0) to start the 2nd inning. Chirinos was outstanding, allowing one hit over five innings of work.

Tampa Bay pitching completely shut down the Baltimore offense, allowing just three hits in the game.

Only a 7th inning solo home run by Orioles third baseman Rio Ruiz prevented a shut out for the Rays.

Diaz would answer Ruiz in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double, concluding the scoring.

Baltimore drops to five games under .500, at 7-12 on the season.

The series concludes tomorrow evening. Andrew Cashner (3-1 5.31) takes the hill for the Orioles.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 pm.
