The Hershey Bears were hosted by the Springfield Thunderbirds on Wednesday January 18, 2017 in Massachusettes, and neither team would disappoint in regulation.
The first period would see two Hershey goals and two Springfield goals just over three minutes into the first period. Wayne Simpson would get his ninth goal of the season at 1:09 after finding a pass from Hubert Larie giving the Bears the lead. John Albert would also tally an assist on the play. Within minutes Anthony Peluso would score for Hershey at 2:32 in the period widening the gap and bring Hershey to a 2-0 lead. Alexandre Grenier would quickly answer back within thirty seconds scoring for Springfield at 3:02 in the game. Not even fifteen seconds later Dryden Hunt would tie the game at 3:16.
In the second period Springfield would take a two goal lead halfway into the period. Anthony Greco would score first at 7:45 bringing the score to 3-2. Maxim Mamin would score again at 9:41 and the Thunderbirds would pull ahead 4-2 going into the third period.
Hershey wasn’t done though and would come out for the third period ready to play. Dustin Gazley would get his fifth goal of the season at 2:52 in the period making it a one goal game. Wayne Simpson would find another point in the game getting his second assist. With less than three minutes left in the game Tyler Graovac would score forcing a 3-3 five minute OT at 17:47 in the final period. Overtime would play out scoreless and Hershey would head into their fifth shootout of the season. Mathias Bau and Chris Bourque would both score during the shootout, but it was the Springfield Thunderbirds who would come out one top, and Hershey would lose 5-4.
This brings Hershey’s record to 17-17-3-3. The Bears outshot the Thunderbirds 37-30.
Hershey has a very exciting weekend coming up as they will be hosting the 2018 Capital BlueCross Outdoor Classic on Saturday January 20th at Hersheypark Stadium.
