Happy 8-Year Anniversary to the “Pipebomb” promo

June 27, 2011, was a day wrestling fans around the world will never forget, as CM Punk interferes in a match between John Cena and R-Truth.

Punk ends up costing Cena the match. In most cases, that would be the main story. It is what happened after the match that got everybody talking.

Punk grabs a microphone and walks up to the ramp. He sits down on the stage (in a Stone Cold Steve Austin T-Shirt) and cuts one of the greatest promos of all time. The man poured his heart out to us. He spoke a lot of truth about how things really go down in WWE. A lot of things from that promo still hold true today.

The summer of Punk was born. The “Best in the World” was born as well. He broke the fourth wall throughout that promo.

Mind you, I was always a fan of CM Punk. I felt he was extremely talented, but this promo made me like him even more. I went out and bought his T-shirts, which I still own to this day. This promo got a lot of people talking. Fans who have not watched in years were tuning in to see Punk.

Living Colours hit song, “Cult of Personality,” that Punk used when he came back became relevant again. This song came out on July 14, 1988. In 2011, it was No. 1 on the I-Tunes rock songs list. That is truly amazing. I personally had never heard the song before, but it instantly became a hit on my playlist.

What Punk did that night was special. I do not think we will ever see anything like that again. If you have not seen the promo before, go check it out on YouTube. Just type, “CM Punk Pipebomb Promo,” and it will pop right up.

Punk’s promo made for great TV and is something fans will continue to talk about for years to come.
