Grant Jr and Koesterer Named Coordinators At Johns Hopkins
Newly hired head coach Peter Milliman wasted no time completing his full time staff. Former Blue Jay player and assistant coach Jamison Koesterer has been named defensive coordinator. On the offensive side lacrosse legend John Grant Jr. will be the coordinator.
Grant Jr. comes to Hopkins from Air Force where he has been an assistant coach the last two seasons. In addition he was the offensive coordinator for the MLL’s Denver Outlaws the last three seasons. They won the championship in 2018 and lost in the title game last season. He is the only player in lacrosse history to win the MLL and NLL MVP’s in the same season. He has one 6 MLL championships and the 2006 FIL World Championship as a player. He played two seasons of college lacrosse at Delaware. He lead the Blue Hens to the NCAA Quarterfinals in 1999. At Delaware he finished with 99 goals and 81 assists, Grant still holds the school record of 110 points. That was achieved as a senior.
Jamison Koesterer is no stranger to Johns Hopkins. He played from 2004-07 winning national titles in 2005 and 2007. During his career he won 176-of-318 (553%)at the X. In 2011 he returned as a graduate assistant to work with the face-off specialists. After three years working at Ohio State as an assistant coach he became defensive coordinator at UMBC in 2016. Koesterer took a defense that was ranked 56th in scoring defense in 2016 to 19th in 2017 and first in 2018. They set a school record in 2018 with 7.77 goals allowed per game. He also was in the 2012 release Crooked Arrows. He played the bad guy rival to Brandon Routh’s Crooked Arrows. His knowledge of the school and relationships with some prominent alumni will help Coach Milliman get up to speed quickly.
In addition to the two hires senior attackman Cole Williams has withdrawn from the transfer portal and will take his extra year with the Jays as a grad student. Jared Fernandez also announced he will be transferring to Hopkins from Syracuse. He was listed as the top undergrad transfer by Inside Lacrosse. He is a long stick midfielder which is a position that has been a struggle for Hopkins in recent seasons. He has two years of eligibility remaining. If you combine those two players with a top five recruiting class there are some good things for the new staff to build on.
