FIFA World Cup 6/15 Recap

The second day of the World Cup featured a slate of three phenomenal matches. Here’s what happened:

Uruguay 1, Egypt 0 (Group A)

  • Goals
    • Uruguay: Giménez (89′)
    • Egypt: N/A
  • Cards
    • Uruguay: None
    • Egypt: Morsy (Yellow, 90+3′), Hegazi (Yellow, 90+6′)

This game was quiet until the end. Uruguay had more opportunities the whole game, with 14 shots to Egypt’s 8, but weren’t able to capitalize until the very last minute, when Carlos Sánchez crossed it into the box after a set piece, allowing José Giménez to finish it off with a header to the top right corner, giving Uruguay an important three points to begin the group stage.

Iran 1, Morocco 0 (Group B)

  • Goals
    • Iran: Bouhaddouz (Own Goal, 90+5′)
    • Morocco: N/A
  • Cards
    • Iran: Ansarifard (Yellow, 90+2′)
    • Morocco: Shojaei (Yellow, 10′), El Ahmadi (Yellow, 34′), Jahanbakhsh (Yellow, 47′)

The second game of the day proved similar to the first, as the action didn’t really get going until the very end. Both teams were scoreless going into the stoppage time, six minutes at the end of the second half. With one minute to go in stoppage time, Iran put a corner kick into the box, which was brutally headed in by the Moroccan Aziz Bouhaddouz into his own net. It was a heartbreaking moment, and you couldn’t help but feel for the guy who cost his team three points in a game against the easiest opponent they’ll face in the group round.

Portugal 3, Spain 3 (Group B)

  • Goals
    • Portugal: Ronaldo (PK, 4′), Ronaldo (44′), Ronaldo (88′)
    • Spain: Costa (24′), Costa (55′), Nacho (58′)
  • Cards
    • Portugal: Fernandes (Yellow, 28′)
    • Spain: Busquets (Yellow, 17′)

This was without a doubt the best game of the day, and maybe one of the best group round games in World Cup history. The story was without a doubt Ronaldo, who put the team on his back and became the oldest player in World Cup history to score a hat trick, as well as the first player to ever score a hat trick against Spain in a World Cup. His final goal, which came when the Portuguese desperately needed an equalizer with two minutes left in the second half before stoppage time, was a beautiful free kick that curled around the Spanish wall and into the top right corner of the net. If you haven’t seen it yet, look it up. It was gorgeous.
