Eshelman solid in debut, Orioles drop series opener in Tampa 6-3: Recap 7/1/19

The Baltimore Orioles began a three-game set tonight as visitors in Tampa Bay Florida, and even though they dropped the opener, rookie Tom Eshelman impress in his major league debut.

Eshelman was solid in his first major league appearance, as he tossed five innings, allowing two runs off six hits. Both of the runs allowed came in a rocky first inning, but Eshelman limited the damage and shut down the Rays lineup after that.

The Rays took a 2-0 first inning lead, following a pair of RBI singles.

Hanser Alberto, who came into the game hitting .417 against lefties, got the Birds on the board, ripping an RBI single up the middle to cut the Rays lead to 2-1.

In the sixth inning, catcher Pedro Severino would tie up the game, singling home Renato Nunez to make the game 2-2. Rio Ruiz followed that with an RBI single of his own, scoring Severino to take a 3-2 lead. Tom Eshelman left the game with a chance for a win in his first start.

The home run bug would strike Branden Kline in the sixth, as he allowed a three-run shot that put the Rays back on top at 5-3.

Miguel Castro would allow another run in the seventh, a soft single to left field that doubled the Rays lead to 6-3.

The Orioles would fail to get back in the game and lost the opener by a score of 6-3.

Our MSB Oriole Player of the Game is starting pitcher Tom Eshelman, who after just being called up earlier today, had an impressive first outing against a solid team. We can not wait to see more of Eshelman going forward.

Branden Kline took the loss and moves to 1-4 on the season.

The Orioles return to action in sunny St. Petersburg, Florida, Tuesday for game two at 7:10 p.m. ET.
