Dominant Hopkins Lacrosse Set To Clash With Rutgers

The red-hot #6 Johns Hopkins Blue Jays (6-2) will take on the #9 Rutgers Scarlet Knights (7-2) to begin conference play this Sunday in Piscataway, NJ.

The Blue Jays are riding a five-game winning streak that features wins against several powerhouse teams, including #12 Virginia and #10 Syracuse. More pivotal matchups with ranked teams, such as #2 Maryland and #15 Michigan, loom in the Blue Jays’ future after this weekend’s game versus the Scarlet Knights.

Hopkins lacrosse carried out one of its largest comebacks in recent team history last Saturday, as the Blue Jays defeated the #12 Virginia Cavaliers after falling behind by seven goals in the first half. Junior Kyle Marr’s four goals and the team’s spectacular defense in the second half helped the Blue Jays rally to defeat the Cavaliers in Charlottesville by a final score of 15-13.

The Blue Jays continue to be led by senior Shack Stanwick, whose 30 points and 43% shooting percentage lead the team’s starters so far this season. Last Saturday’s star, junior Kyle Marr, follows closely with 28 points in the 2018 campaign.

The Scarlet Knights come into Sunday’s game on a winning streak of their own, with consecutive victories over Delaware, #10 Syracuse, and #17 Lehigh already in the books. Despite the Scarlet Knights’ overall success, Rutgers lacrosse struggles to win face-offs. The team holds a lackluster 47% face-off win percentage, which ranks 39th in Division I men’s lacrosse.

Senior attackman Jules Heningburg is the veteran leader of the Scarlet Knights and is listed on the 2018 Tewaaraton Award Watch List. His 46 points this season lead the team statistically alongside a solid personal shooting percentage of 47%. Fellow attackman Kieran Mullins, a Long Island native, ranks second on the team with 26 points on the season.

The matchup between #6 Johns Hopkins and #9 Rutgers will begin at 7 p.m. this Sunday, April 1. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
